MORGANITE

Morganite is the pink to orange-pink variety of beryl, a mineral that includes emerald and aquamarine. It was first identified in Madagascar, in 1910 and known as “pink beryl”. Among the beryls, morganite is one of the rarest forms, second only to red bixbite.

COLOUR

The most prized colours are a strong pink to magenta colour, often the result of heat treatment. Untreated material, especially from Brazil, often has a salmon-like orangy pink colour. Colour of stone is often light. More intense colours cause a significant rise in value.

CLARITY

Faceted stones often do not have eye-visible inclusions. Larger sizes are more likely to show inclusions. Stones with numerous eye-visible inclusions are carved or cut as cabochons.

CUT AND SHAPE

Morganite is typically faceted to maximize its colour and brilliance. This stone is also popular with gemstone carvers. Light-colour material might be cut slightly deep to help intensify the colour. Stones are most often cut into rounds, ovals, cushions and pears, as well as trillions, hearts and briolettes.

WEIGHT

The stones are found in all sizes and are often cut in calibrated sizes to fit standard jewelry mountings. Large faceted stones are not uncommon.

Morganite is a pink stone of love. It is said to carry an energy that can warm the soul of its wearer. It is best used for opening the heart chakra and it is often used to help cleanse the body of stress and anxiety. All beryl gems, including pink morganite, represent purity and potential.
